History

January 26th 1954, a special meeting was held at the Lehigh Fire Co # 1 in Lehighton with Corvin Solt as the temporary chairman. The following officers were elected to serve on the newly formed Ambulance Association:

  • Chairman: Fred Blank
  • Sec Treasure: Edward J Conarty Jr.
  • Medical Advisor: Dr S. E. Lentz
  • Directors: John Koch
  • Corvin Solt
  • Edward J Conarty Jr.
  • A.L. Nothstein
  • James Beisel Jr.
  • Charles Kipp
  • Kenneth Ashner
  • Captain in charge of equipment: Calvin Geiger

The motion was made by Corvin Solt to name the organization “Lehigh Fire Co # 1 Ambulance Association.”. According to the minutes taken at that meeting “the press was notified” and the meeting ended. Lehighton Ambulance was born.

It was at the second meeting that the motion was made to purchase “ 6 white coats and caps to be worn by the drivers and assistants” and the fee for membership was set @ $2.00 per year per head of the family. This would include all family members up the age of 21. For the $ 2.00, the ambulance would provide free ambulance service within a 90 mile radius. Non members would be charged $.50 per mile with a minimum charge of $5.00.

The Lehighton Ambulance has come a long way from its humble beginnings. The ten founding fathers would be astonished to see how the organization has grown. Separated from the fire company in the 1990s, the Lehighton Ambulance Association Inc is a free standing, incorporated, 5013c corporation.

Lehighton Ambulance provides both Advanced and Basic Life Support, 24 hours a day 365 days a year, to the residents of Carbon County out of our two stations. One station @ 516 Iron Street in the Borough of Lehighton and the other, 1992 Rt 903 in Penn Forest Township.

Out of those 2 stations, nearly 100 volunteers and career staff, 6 ambulances, 2 wheelchair vans, and a Mass Casualty unit. In 2004 we responded to over 4600 calls for our service.

As we continue to grow we pride ourselves on our patient care and the dedication of our staff and volunteers.

The Board of directors and officers of this association hope you find this web site both informative and useful.
